Beyond Meds: 6 Healthy Lifestyle Changes – BodBeat Episode 7

Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of interrelated risk factors of metabolic origin that appear to directly promote the development of arthrosclerosis

Metabolic syndrome is Abdominal Obesity (an over abundance of fat around your middle) and Insulin Resistance (Type II diabetes), coupled with Excess Stress and Hypertension.

According to the experts, the increasing burden of obesity in the United States is the driving force behind the rising prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome.

Why is this so important, because for the last 20 yrs Pharmaceutical Industry has been coming up with better drugs for Diabetes and Hypertension and American are getting worse? Not better….

The medical doctors write prescriptions and patients are only getting more ill.

You can’t take your insulin and go out and eat every fast food that crosses your path. You can’t take your high blood pressure meds or your heart drugs and be a couch potato all day every day.

The medications don’t work without Life Style changes

You might even be able to get off your medications if you got off your asses to help yourself

National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Director Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D., said, “This statement should serve as an alert to physicians that it is vitally important to identify and treat the growing number of people with metabolic syndrome. For individuals with this syndrome, lifestyle treatment…is the primary therapy for lowering their risk factors and reducing the long-term risk for heart disease.”

Helping patients adopt a therapeutic lifestyle is the first and possible the most important therapy doctors can use to treat many chronic health problems

Consider a few facts:

91% of type II diabetes cases could be prevented by the adoption of healthy habits and lifestyle choices.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends lifestyle changes as the most important and cost effective way to lower cholesterol (not putting the world on cholesterol lowering drugs)

Lifestyle changes are now recommended as the “First Line Therapy” for the major chronic diseases in our society

Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Cancer, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease.

Lifestyle choices are also the key to many symptoms that are not classified as diseases

Fatigue, Stress-Related Symptoms, Hormonal Imbalances and many others

The American Diabetes Association reports that approximately 2200 new cases of diabetes are reported in the US every day. According to estimates from the National Institutes of Health, over 50 million Americans have “Metabolic Syndrome”, a disorder that is directly responsible for America’s unusually large population of Type 2 Diabetics.

Six Steps You Need To Start Taking “Fundamental of Therapeutic Life Style Program”

1. Knowledge

A healthy lifestyle starts with the knowledge to make an informed decision that impacts your health every day.

2. Balanced Eating

Balanced eating habits have a direct influence on excess insulin production, body composition, and disease prevention.

3. Regular Activity/Exercise

A regular program of aerobic, strength training and flexibility exercises has been shown to reverse insulin resistance, increase vitality and reduce the risk for disease.

4. Appropriate Nutritional Supplementation

Incorporating a foundational nutritional program with targeted nutrients that help to prevent and/or treat specific conditions is an essential part of the therapeutic life style program.

5. Stress Management

For optimum health, regular stress management programs help keep insulin and other hormonal levels balanced, improving vitality.

6. Sleep

Sleep is crucial for the proper functioning of the mind and body. Quality and depth of sleep is of primary importance. Although the amount of sleep individuals need varies, most people should get 7-8 ½ hours per night.

Combating stress: BodBeat Episode 3

Times are tough.  Money’s short … we need to do more today in less time.

I’m actually surprised more are not stressed out most of the time.

And here’s something to really stress you out.

Stress can profoundly affect your health and well being!

Do you know that 3 out of 4 of all visits to a primary care physician are for stress related complaints or disorders.  Some put the figure as high as 90%.

Yes my friends, stress can kill ya.  And we’re not talking just about stress related accidents … don’t lie, we’ve all had ‘em.  But we’re talkin’ heart disease, cancer, lung disease, liver disease … all can be brought on my excessive stress.

So what is actually happening physically when you get stressed?

Your body’s tough.  Kinda like the guys I grew up with in Brooklyn.

If you were walking in the woods and bear came out after you. You would high tail it out of the woods as fast as you can. That Fight/Flight response gives you the extra energy you need at the moment of crisis.

Other bodily functions not urgently needed at that time are shut down … and those functions that help you cope with situation at hand are enhanced … like increasing heart rate and respirations.

While a certain amount of stress is healthy … it keeps you alive.

But imagine chronic prolonged stress.  Remember, during stress other bodily functions are shut down.  So prolonged stress can weaken your immune system and hamper your body’s ability to fight disease.

Most of know stress can cause Anxiety, Digestive Problems, Sleeplessness, Depression and problems with relationships.  But there are hidden problems with stress too.

Normally cortisol and adrenaline are produced in the morning between 6am – 8am.  It’s what helps you get your butt out of bed in the morning … and it lowers naturally at night to allow you to go to sleep.

When Stress is a constant factor all day every day cortisol and adrenaline are being produced at inappropriate times throughout the day. Wonder why you can’t get to sleep?

It what’s more … Cortisol is an inflammatory hormone.  High cortisol levels increase insulin production from the pancreas … which causes more fat storage to occur.  End result.  You gain weight.  And worse .. high insulin and cortisol levels cause inflammation in the blood vessels.  It’s kind of like a blow torch burning away your blood vessels.  Not good.  We’re talking Coronary Artery Disease people.

So how do you stop stress?

You want to support the adrenal glands as much as you can.

B Vitamins are especially helpful, B5 B6 support the Adrenals.  Something important here though: whenever you take a single B Vitamin you must take a multi as well. The single B vitamin will leach out the other B vitamins from your body.

Some Herbal Remedies: Rehmannia root, Schisandra Fruit, Chinese salvia a little Don Quai Root, Licorice Root ,Ashwagandha Root  Asian Ginseng root Extract, and Rhodiola Root Extract.  These can help maintain equilibrium, restore inner calm ,  and support immune function,

Adrenal Adaptogens increase energy, enhanced mental clarity, promote balanced hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function for enhanced ability to adapt to stress

Glandualar Formulas provide nutritional support for adrenals by combining high quality nutrients that are involved in hormonal regulation that come from a bovine source. Extremely effective formula to use…but should only be used for a few months at time.
